Google Pixel aims for new sales records
Interest in the Pixel 8 series, introduced by Google in recent days, reached levels that even surprised Google.
Google's Pixel smartphone series has seen a steady growth in popularity since its inception in 2016. Recently achieving the shipment of nearly 40 million units, Google is gradually making its mark in the global smartphone arena, even if it still trails behind some of the dominant players.
This accomplishment comes in the wake of the recent launch of the Pixel 8 series. Insights provided by Francisco Jeronimo, Vice President of the international market research firm IDC, detail that from 2016 to 2023, Google dispatched a whopping 37.9 million Pixel phones. As Jeronimo pointed out, the last few years have been particularly fruitful for the tech giant, with sales witnessing a double-digit growth, cumulatively nearing the 40 million mark.

While these figures might appear modest, especially when juxtaposed with Apple's annual shipment of over 224 million iPhones, it's indicative of the growing allure of Pixel phones among consumers. Indeed, Google has managed to not only sustain but also expand its market footprint in pivotal markets such as the US and Japan. In Japan, the Pixel brand stands out as the top-selling Android line, even chipping away at iPhone's market dominance. Meanwhile, in North America, Google was distinguished as the sole smartphone brand to register year-on-year growth.
Circling back to last year, prior to the launch of Pixel 7, Google was nearing the 30 million shipment benchmark, having sold 27.6 million units. This suggests that in the last year alone, around 10 million Pixel phones have been dispatched - potentially marking the most successful year for the Pixel series, surpassing the previous best of 7.2 million units.
Factors such as Google's emphasis on an uncluttered software interface, integration of innovative AI features, and prompt software updates likely contribute to this success. As Google faces off against entrenched competitors like Apple and Samsung, it will be intriguing to track its trajectory in the subsequent years.
