Google Photos gains another feature

Google Photos, essential for Android users, is getting an additional feature.

Google Photos gains another feature

Google is enhancing its Photos app by introducing a new feature that supports the backup of RAW Photos. This addition is currently available on both Android and iOS platforms. RAW Photos, often favored by professional photographers, are unprocessed images that contain more intricate details, providing a richer base for further editing.

With the prevalence of camera apps that support RAW Photos, it's become standard for modern smartphones to produce such images. The Google Photos app now automatically uploads these RAW photos to the Google Cloud, as indicated by a recent in-app notification highlighting the ability to back up RAW images.

When browsing the app, users can identify a RAW image through a dedicated badge. This feature has been observed in the Pixel 8 series, but there's no confirmation yet on its availability for the Pixel Fold and other devices. As of now, Google has not released any official statement, leaving the specifics of this feature, including its broad compatibility, a matter of speculation.

One notable aspect of this update is the lack of control settings. Users currently don't have the option to disable the automatic uploading of RAW files to Google Storage. Even accessing the Storage option in Photos Preferences doesn't offer a workaround. Considering the substantial size of RAW files and the limited 15GB of free storage Google provides, users might quickly exhaust their available space. Thus, this feature seems best suited for professional photographers who require such functionality.

The Google Photos app continues to evolve, aiming to enrich user experience. In addition to the RAW Photos backup feature, Google has recently redesigned the share menu, enabling users to swiftly send images, craft new albums, or add to existing ones. Further amplifying its capabilities, desktop editing tools have also been introduced, offering users various filter options and basic image adjustments such as brightness modifications, saturation levels, and HDR adjustments.
