Good news from Samsung for Galaxy S21 users

Samsung recently launched the newest security update for its Galaxy S21 series, including the July 2023 security patch. Initially available in select Latin American countries, it is expected to roll out to other regions soon. The Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S23 series are already in the process of receiving this update.

The firmware version G99xBXXS9EWF3, incorporating the July 2023 security patch, is now accessible to Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and Galaxy S21 Ultra devices. With this update, Samsung addresses over 90 security vulnerabilities present in the prior software version. It's important to note that this particular update focuses solely on security enhancements, introducing no new features or performance improvements. As of now, users in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay can access this update.

Samsung's security bulletin illustrates that the July 2023 security patch fixes 90 security issues across different Galaxy phones and tablets. Out of these fixes, Google has provided 52, and Samsung has developed 38 security vulnerability solutions. The patch addresses three critical flaws, alongside 56 high-priority issues, with the remaining vulnerabilities labeled as moderate risks. Notably, Google has incorporated three fixes previously included in Samsung's June 2023 patch in its July update.

Samsung's security vulnerabilities addressed include issues related to manual package installation via ADB command, improper audio system access control, UWB chipset identifier, broadcast SMS configuration, and Galaxy Themes Service, among others. Settings suffered from improper access control problems, and certain internal testing functions experienced out-of-bounds write issues, which could potentially allow unauthorized code execution.

Most detected vulnerabilities are found in devices running Android 11, Android 12, Android 12L, and Android 13. Some issues are specifically related to Qualcomm chips and components, Mali and PowerVR GPUs, and memory management.

Owners of the Galaxy S21 series residing in the aforementioned countries can download the new update. Introduced by Samsung in early 2021 with Android 11 pre-installed, the Galaxy S21 series later received the Android 12 update in late 2021 and the Android 13 update in late 2022. Samsung is expected to release the Android 14-based One UI 6.0 update for the Galaxy S21 series later this year.
