Elon Musk appears determined to reinvent Twitter!
The ongoing changes for the platform, formerly known as Twitter and now named X, continue to question Elon Musk's intentions.
The acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk for a whopping $44 billion marked the beginning of a series of transformative events for the platform. Within the span of a year, these changes would shake the core of the platform's identity, many of which garnered widespread criticism. One of the most controversial changes was the introduction of a paid subscription service, followed by a rebranding effort where Twitter changed its name and logo to “X.” This drastic overhaul prompted many long-time users to seek refuge in alternative platforms, with Threads becoming a popular choice.
However, in spite of the mass migration, Twitter, or X as it was now called, managed to retain its massive user base. But the shocks didn't end there. In a move that stunned many, the tech mogul introduced an annual fee of $1 for new users from New Zealand and the Philippines, granting them access to the platform's basic features, including tweeting, retweeting, and interacting with posts.

For those unwilling or unable to pay this fee, their interaction with the platform was limited. They could read posts, watch videos, and follow accounts, but they couldn't engage or use other primary features. In a bid to clarify the rationale behind these changes, both the company and Musk explained that the primary objective was to curb spam, harmful content, and potential manipulation of the platform. Moreover, Musk assured that users could still create "read-only" accounts without these basic features for free. In essence, if someone was content with just reading tweets and viewing content, the platform would continue to be available without any charges. Yet, for those who wished to have a more active presence, they might have to fork over the nominal annual fee.
