Behold, the world's slimmest foldable smartphone in all its aspects: MIX Fold 3
Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has put extensive effort into the MIX Fold 3 model. So, what features will this phone offer to users?
Foldable smartphones have evolved from niche products to mainstream devices. While Samsung remains a dominant player, Chinese brands are making significant strides in innovation. Honor recently showcased its incredibly thin book-style foldable, the Magic V2. However, Xiaomi is set to challenge this with its Mix Fold 3, scheduled for launch in China on August 14.
Xiaomi's primary focus has been on achieving slimness in its foldables. The Mix Fold 2 was already slender at 11mm in thickness and weighed 262 grams. The upcoming Mix Fold 3 takes this a notch higher. When opened, it boasts a thickness of 4.93mm, and when closed, it stands at 9.8mm. For comparison, Honor's Magic V2 is 4.7mm thick when unfolded and 9.9mm when folded. A distinctive design feature of the Mix Fold 3 is its four camera rings on the rear and its flat-edged sides.
The slimness can be attributed to its redesigned hinge. This hinge is a blend of robust high-strength steel and enduring carbon ceramic. It uses a 3-stage connecting rod mechanism with 14 moving parts and 198 components. This is a significant upgrade from the Mix Fold 2's hinge which used an 8-part, 87-component 2-stage design. The Mix Fold 3's hinge is also more flexible, allowing users to set it anywhere between 45° and 135°. It has undergone rigorous testing by TÜV Rheinland and successfully withstood 500,000 folds.
The Mix Fold 3 sports an 8.02-inch foldable AMOLED screen with a 2K resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 2,600 nits. Additionally, its exterior screen is 6.5 inches with FHD+ resolution.
In terms of performance, the Mix Fold 3 is expected to house the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, a notable improvement from the Mix Fold 2's Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. It might come with up to 16 GB of LPDDR5x RAM and a maximum of 1 TB UFS 4.0 storage. There are also whispers of an IP rating for the device. As per battery performance, Xiaomi's CEO has shared that the Mix Fold 3 demonstrated impressive longevity, running for over 8 hours on a single charge. Although the exact battery capacity is still undisclosed, it's rumored to support 67W wired and 50W wireless charging.

The camera system on the Mix Fold 3 is expected to be remarkable. It's the brand's first foldable to utilize a quad-camera system optimized by Leica. The primary lens is anticipated to be a 50-megapixel sensor, but there's ambiguity regarding whether it's the Sony IMX989 or IMX800 sensor. Additionally, a periscope telephoto lens is part of the camera setup.
Despite the array of information available, the price of the Mix Fold 3 remains a mystery. As a point of reference, the Mix Fold 2's prices ranged from approximately $1,335 for the 256GB variant to $1,780 for the 1TB version.
