Apple working on under-display camera technology
Apple has begun developing under-display camera technology for future iPhone models, potentially launching after 2026.
Under-display camera technology, while currently limited in its application, is set to make a significant leap forward as Apple reportedly begins work on integrating it into future iPhones. This development could herald the arrival of an all-screen, bezel-less iPhone.
Apple's transition from its traditional notch display to the Dynamic Island design in this year's iPhone lineup marked a significant design shift. The upcoming next-generation SE model is also expected to feature the same pill-shaped cutout. However, Apple is now looking to eliminate even this feature in favor of under-display camera technology in its future iPhones. According to a report from The Elec, Apple's Korean supplier, LG Innotek, has started advanced development on an under-panel camera (UPC) system.

One of the main challenges with UPC technology is the loss of light transmission compared to traditional selfie cameras, which often results in lower image quality. To address this, LG Innotek is developing a 'freeform optic' special lens system. This system aims to control the thickness of the peripheral lens to reduce distortion and enhance the light-intensity ratio around the optical module.
Despite these advancements, it is anticipated that it will be a few years before under-display camera technology is seen on an iPhone. Apple is expected to first adopt under-panel Face ID technology in the iPhone 17, slated for release in 2025. The first all-screen iPhone with a UPC is likely to debut in 2027 with the iPhone 19, marking a significant milestone in smartphone design and technology.
