The leading name in the smartphone industry, Apple, will transition to the USB-C port with its iPhone 15 series. Yet, Saudi Arabia made a startling decision related to this.

Apple, known for its proprietary Lightning connector, is anticipated to make a major shift in its upcoming iPhone 15 by adopting the USB-C interface. This change is seen as a proactive move, especially considering the emerging legal requirements in various regions.

The European Union has already proposed a law which mandates the use of USB-C in smartphones, slated to take effect from December 28, 2024. Similarly, Saudi Arabia is also moving in this direction. From January 1, 2025, electronic devices, including smartphones and related accessories, will be required to feature USB-C. By April 1, 2026, this requirement will be extended to cover laptops and tablets.

The driving force behind these legal stipulations is the ambition to enhance user experience, minimize costs, and mitigate electronic waste. A universal connector like USB-C, known for its fast data transfer capabilities, would allow users to utilize one cable for multiple devices, reducing clutter and waste. While Brazil's regulatory agency Anatel proposed a similar mandate last year, the US Commerce Department is contemplating such a shift but hasn't finalized its stance.

Apple is squarely in the crosshairs of these legislative moves since several of its products, including iPhones and some accessories, still utilize the Lightning port. However, Apple has been gradually introducing USB-C in its devices since the launch of the 12-inch MacBook in 2015. With the expected launch of the iPhone 15 featuring USB-C, the company seems to be aligning itself with these global connector standardizations.
