An intriguing call from Samsung to Apple!
South Korean tech giant Samsung made a striking appeal to its biggest competitor, Apple.
For more than a year, Google has been ardently urging Apple to adopt the Rich Communication Services (RCS) protocol. In fact, Google even initiated a campaign named 'Get The Message' to intensify the pressure. Apple, however, remained unperturbed. Recently, Samsung decided to jump on the bandwagon, siding with Google in its mission, and they did so with a touch of sarcasm.
Samsung launched a new promotional video on YouTube advocating for Apple to incorporate RCS. The video, portraying a Romeo and Juliet inspired narrative, delves into the budding 'relationship' between two messaging bubbles yearning to be together. Their union is hindered, metaphorically suggesting Apple's hesitance to integrate RCS into iMessage. Through this poignant narrative, Samsung hopes to augment Google’s #GetTheMessage movement.

The RCS protocol is projected to be a significant enhancement from the existing SMS, introducing features that SMS lacks - encryption, group messaging, and animated stickers, to name a few. RCS chats promise a comprehensive messaging experience, from revealing when someone is typing to permitting the sharing of large files and high-resolution images. Currently, RCS is supported on all Android devices.
The efficiency of RCS can only be maximized when universally adopted across all smartphone brands, including Apple. Apple's reluctance might be attributed to its intent to retain its exclusive ecosystem. Whether Apple willingly accepts RCS remains to be seen. However, with increasing external pressures, especially from regulatory bodies like the EU, the tech giant may be prompted to be more accommodating.
