A dose of concern for Google Pixel 8 series owners!
Google Pixel 8 series owners may have cause for concern regarding battery life.
Despite the Google Pixel 7 series earning praise for its exceptional photo quality, long-standing complaints about subpar battery life and cellular stability have plagued Google's flagship smartphones compared to competitors like Apple, Xiaomi, and OnePlus. The primary culprit has often been attributed to Google's power-intensive Tensor chipsets, manufactured by Samsung's foundry.
A dose of concern for Google Pixel 8 series owners!
In the wake of the recent Google Pixel 8 series launch, eager fans hoped that the new Tensor G3 chipset would bring improvements to battery life. However, a closer look at the fine print in Google's "Compare Phones" section on its website reveals that the Pixel 8 series not only suffers from the same battery life issues as the Pixel 7 series but also falls short of the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, released two years ago.
According to the official fine print, both the Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro's batteries lasted an average of 31 hours in Google's internal testing. This places them on par with the Pixel 7a, Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro from the previous year. Moreover, when compared to the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro released two years ago, the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro's battery life is inferior, as they last only 3 hours less than Google's Pixel 6 at 34 hours. The following table summarizes Google's claims of average battery life in its Pixel lineup, arranged in descending order, alongside each Pixel smartphone's battery capacity.
For context, external testers like TechDroider on YouTube conducted battery life tests on last year's Google Pixel 7 Pro against competitors including the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, OnePlus 11, Xiaomi 13 Ultra, and Apple's iPhone 15 Pro Max. Their results, as shown in Table 2, indicate that the Pixel 7 Pro lags significantly behind its competitors in terms of battery life, with a shortfall of around 2 hours. The reported battery life result of 8 hours and 13 minutes falls far short of Google's official claim of 31 hours for the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro.
If Google's claims regarding the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro's battery life are accurate, it suggests that the Pixel 8 series continues to struggle with the same "31-hour" battery life as the Pixel 7 and possibly even worse battery life than the Pixel 6 series.
