Cancer drug shortage gets serious: Imports from China has begun
Cancer drug shortage has been an ongoing problem for the last couple months and now imports will begun.
Cancer is one of the scariest diseases of our time and still needs a lot of work. Medicines for people with different types of cancer are vital, but drug shortages are already a problem. Alternative methods are being tried to solve this situation.
Cancer drug shortage has been an ongoing problem
The Food and Drug Administration is collaborating with a Chinese pharmaceutical company to import cisplatin, a chemotherapy drug that is currently in short supply in the United States.
A spokesperson for the FDA, James McKinney, claims that the agency is also looking into the possibility of importing carboplatin, another chemotherapy drug that is in short supply. However, McKinney informed NBC News that the agency was unable to provide further details regarding the potential drug supplier at this time.
Cisplatin has been in shortage in the U.S. since February, while carboplatin has been in shortage since late April. The situation stands as a serious health problem for everyone including the patients and their families and it has to be solved very quickly.
FDA Commissioner Robert Califf said: "In these situations, we very carefully assess product quality and require companies to take certain measures to ensure the products are safe for patients. The public should rest assured that we will continue all efforts within our authority to help the industry that manufactures and distributes these drugs meet all patient needs for the oncology drugs impacted by shortages."
