The decline in the AR/VR market continues to concern manufacturers
As the AR/VR market continues to decline, manufacturers hope that the market will pick up with the release of Apple's device.
In the second quarter of 2023, the AR/VR headset sector witnessed a significant downturn, marking its fourth quarter of decline. Global shipments plummeted by 44.6% compared to the same period in the previous year, as stated by the International Data Corporation (IDC). Predictions indicate that total shipments for the entire year will only marginally exceed those of 2017, with a projection of 8.5 million units. Such figures suggest that the market has been facing a sustained period of stagnation.
The main drivers behind this decline encompass a broader global economic downturn, which has curtailed consumer demand. Additionally, the elevated price of the Meta Quest 2 and the absence of new product introductions have further exacerbated the downturn.
Despite these challenges, Meta retains its leading position in the market, holding a dominant 50.2% share. Sony and Pico, a subsidiary of ByteDance, follow with shares of 27.1% and 9.6%, respectively. Both companies have seen an uptick in their market shares compared to the same quarter in the preceding year. On the other hand, firms like XReal and DPVR (DaPeng VR) trail behind with barely noticeable market shares, hovering just over 2%.
The decline in the AR/VR market continues to concern manufacturers
In a glimmer of optimism for the sector, Apple's recent unveiling of its Vision Pro AR/VR headset during the Apple WWDC has stirred substantial anticipation. Many are speculating about a potential rejuvenation of the AR/VR headset market. However, the industry's current state remains subdued, a far cry from its earlier dynamism.
From a personal standpoint, I believe that a significant portion of AR/VR software has yet to be fine-tuned for daily use by the general public. However, businesses are increasingly recognizing the potential of AR/VR headsets for diverse applications like training, simulations, remote guidance, and AR-focused maintenance. These implementations can amplify efficiency, reduce expenses, and enhance workforce performance.
The advent of groundbreaking products such as Apple's Vision Pro kindles hope for a pivotal market transformation. It may set the stage for a significant market upswing in the near future. Nonetheless, striking the right balance between innovative product launches and optimal pricing will be instrumental in guiding the AR/VR headset sector's trajectory in the upcoming years.
