Sony introduces a camera for the first time after a long hiatus
The Japanese tech giant Sony, known for its silence in the camera sector for a long time, has broken this quietude with its new model.
After a four-year hiatus, Sony has unveiled the A6700 APS-C mirrorless camera, a new addition to its single APS-C camera lineup. This state-of-the-art model is equipped with a 26MP sensor and AI-powered autofocus, a feature also seen in the pricier A7R V camera. Suitable for vlogging, it includes 4K 120p video, active mode stabilization, and AI auto-framing.
The A6700 bears a strong resemblance to the four-year-old Alpha 6600 in terms of its external design, but it boasts numerous significant improvements internally. It is relatively compact, weighing in at just 493 g, inclusive of battery and recording media. Its physical dimensions are 4.8 x 2.7 x 2.5" / 122 x 69 x 63.6 mm.
The centerpiece of the A6700 is its 3:2 APS-C 26MP back-illuminated CMOS Exmor R 4K sensor. It is capable of capturing still images with a resolution of 26MP. For video recording in a 16:9 aspect ratio, it can achieve a maximum resolution of 19.9MP. By oversampling a 6K image (5976×3356), the camera can record UHD video (3840×2160) at up to 60p without pixel binning or line skipping.

The Sony A6700 is also packed with an array of Real-Time Recognition autofocus capabilities, comparable to those seen in the high-end A7R V model. This feature allows the camera to accurately detect and follow a wide array of subjects, such as people, cars, trains, insects, birds, pets, and even airplanes. In addition, the A6700 is furnished with weather sealing, five-axis in-body image stabilization, and an EVF that offers complete coverage.
Furthermore, the camera comes with a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port for high-speed transfers and USB power delivery, a micro HDMI port, and dedicated headphone and microphone ports. With a single charge, the A6700 can capture up to 570 shots.
Priced at $1,399, the Sony A6700's exact release date remains unknown. However, Sony anticipates its arrival on the market later in 2023.
