In a recent announcement, Samsung Electronics revealed a temporary halt to its augmented reality (XR) headset development project. This pause indicates a holistic reassessment of the project's trajectory. The company has notified its panel suppliers of the delay, with the original schedule being pushed back by an estimated 3 to 6 months.

Samsung's reassessment of the XR project was influenced by the introduction of Apple’s mixed reality (MR) headset, the 'Vision Pro.' Assessing the specifications and capabilities of Apple's competitive product led Samsung to reconsider the design, internal specifications, and the overall performance of its XR product.

In the past, Samsung joined forces with Oculus in 2014 to release the 'Gear VR' headset, followed by the introduction of the Odyssey Plus in 2018. However, these products didn't achieve substantial success due to their performance limitations and the absence of a well-developed XR market. User feedback also pointed to the inconvenience of syncing the devices with smartphones.

Samsung Electronics has made strides in enhancing its XR abilities by establishing the Immersive Display Lab as part of its Mobile Experience (MX) Business Unit. This lab focuses exclusively on XR research and development. Although specific details about Samsung's XR devices remain confidential, industry insiders predict that the incorporation of Qualcomm chipsets and Google operating systems (OS) will provide innovative features. The upcoming products, speculated to be in the form of goggles, glasses, or headsets, are expected to be compatible with Galaxy smartphones and watches.
