Microsoft takes a customer-centric approach by offering replacement components for Surface devices, empowering users with self-repair options.
In an effort to empower Surface device owners and foster a culture of self-repair, Microsoft has joined forces with iFixit, a renowned online resource for repair guides and tools. As a result of this collaboration, Microsoft now offers a range of replacement components for its Surface devices directly through its online store. This strategic move aims to make it more convenient for do-it-yourself (DIY) enthusiasts to perform self-repairs on their Surface devices, granting them greater control over the maintenance and longevity of their devices. With this new accessibility to replacement components, users can now delve into the world of DIY repairs, gaining valuable skills and saving costs in the process.
Microsoft now selling replacement components
Microsoft has made it easier for technically inclined customers to perform self-repairs on their out-of-warranty Surface devices by offering replacement components through the Microsoft Store. The available parts include a range of components such as kickstand parts, fingerprint sensors, batteries, replacement display units, and more.
Tim McGuiggan, VP of Device Services and Product Engineering at Microsoft, explained that customers will receive the necessary part along with related collateral components, while the tools required for the repairs can be purchased separately from iFixit.
Initially, the replacement components will be available in the United States, Canada, and France through the Microsoft Store, while other markets will be serviced by certified Microsoft Resellers.
The list of eligible devices includes Surface Pro models 7, 8, and 9, Surface Laptop (Gen 3, 4, and 5), Surface Laptop Go 2, Surface Laptop Studio, and the Surface Studio 2+ all-in-one computer. Pricing for the parts will vary depending on the specific device.
