LG made an intriguing decision for OLED panel development
LG, one of the world's leading OLED panel developers, decided to turn to the domestic market to avoid cost increases.
LG Display, a key figure in the global display technology landscape, recently made strides in its ambition to develop homegrown technology. Collaborating with LG Chem, the two giants have jointly developed a pivotal material used in OLED screens, known as p-type dopants. Previously, they imported this essential component, but now, this marks a significant shift towards domestic production. In fact, in the past year alone, LG Display has upped its acquisition of materials from local suppliers, moving from 58% to 64%.
P-type dopants play a crucial role in the performance of OLEDs. They enhance the brightness uniformity, ensure efficient energy consumption, and extend the longevity of the displays. Yet, they are also susceptible to damage from exposure to the atmosphere.
This monumental breakthrough didn't happen overnight. A decade-long partnership between LG Display and LG Chem saw the former focusing on the material's design while the latter took charge of its production. The resulting product rivals the previously purchased material in quality and performance.

Reflecting on this journey, Yoon Soo-young, an executive at LG Display, recalled their commitment to developing indigenous core materials, which began around the time they launched their inaugural large OLED TV in 2013. Furthermore, this recent advancement is particularly vital for the development of a new generation of OLEDs, which promise brighter displays and longer lifespans.
This initiative not only strengthens LG Display's supply chain but also fortifies their intellectual property and positions them as frontrunners in the OLED sector. As of 2023's early statistics, LG already dominates the global OLED TV market, surpassing giants like Sony and Samsung.
Looking to the future, LG Display intends to incorporate this novel material across a range of OLED panels. Lee Hyun-woo, another executive from LG Display, believes that prioritizing locally-sourced materials provides them with a competitive edge in the ever-evolving OLED market.
Rumors are also circulating about a potential partnership between LG and Apple, focusing on developing bezel-less OLED displays for upcoming iPhone models.
