Apple Vision Pro outpaces Meta Quest 3 by three years, analyst claims

The Meta Quest 3 launched on October 10, taking an early lead over the Apple Vision Pro, which is expected to arrive in early 2024 and will only be accessible through an appointment system. Despite the potential challenges in acquiring the expensive AR headset from Apple, one analyst believes that Apple's premium offering has a substantial technological advantage, putting it ahead by three years compared to Meta's product.

With the Meta Quest 3 priced at $499 and the Apple Vision Pro at $3,499, there is a significant pricing gap between the two mixed-reality headsets. Ming-Chi Kuo, a TF International Securities analyst, suggests in a Medium blog post that Apple's headset is technically two to three years ahead of the Meta Quest 3, even though its release is scheduled for early 2024.

The uncertain release timeline from Apple indicates that the head-mounted device may not be available in January but sometime thereafter. Kuo also noted that the Apple Vision Pro targets a different audience due to its high price, but its capabilities may generate significant interest.

However, Apple does not intend to maintain the same price strategy for a potential successor to the Apple Vision Pro, particularly if it aims to capture a larger market share rapidly. The company plans to introduce a more affordable version of the AR headset, which is expected to feature an iPhone chipset instead of a Mac one, along with a downgraded display and other cost-saving features to reduce the price.

Currently, the AR headset market is facing challenges, with Kuo stating that Meta has reduced its fourth-quarter shipments forecast for the Quest 3 by up to 10 percent, which could result in an 80 percent quarter-over-quarter shipment decline in the first quarter of 2024. Despite the Meta Quest 3's $499 price tag, the market needs further maturation before it gains significant traction.
