Microsoft's insistence on virtual reality continues
Microsoft, one of the biggest names in the gaming world and constantly elevating its status, appears quite determined when it comes to virtual reality.
Microsoft Game Studios, a luminary in the gaming world, has reiterated its stance of not venturing into the realm of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) in the near future. During a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Matt Booty, who heads Microsoft Game Studios, underscored that the present condition of VR and AR does not match Microsoft's benchmarks for triumph in gaming.
The guiding principle of success for Microsoft in gaming involves luring an expansive player base, ideally around 10 million users. However, VR and AR have not yet drawn in such a massive audience. Booty acknowledges the potential these cutting-edge technologies bear, but he emphasizes that Microsoft's current focus is to capitalize on its existing Intellectual Properties (IPs) to foster sustained franchises and dynamic gaming communities.
This strategy sharply distinguishes Microsoft from its rivals such as Sony and Meta (previously Facebook). Sony's recent launch of PlayStation VR2 made a strong market impact, selling 600,000 units within the first six weeks. Sony's president, Hiroki Totoki, even suggested that the PS VR2 might outstrip the cumulative sales of its predecessor, which had reached 5 million units by the end of 2019. Similarly, Meta reported earlier this year that its Quest VR headset already boasts nearly 20 million units sold.
Microsoft's VR strategy has not been without criticism. In November 2019, Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft's gaming division, triggered a heated debate with his remarks on VR, perceived by some as belittling the technology. Nevertheless, he later elucidated his stand, acknowledging the value of the gaming industry's venture into various sectors while emphasizing that VR wasn't their immediate priority.
While VR aficionados might feel let down by Microsoft's current position, it underscores the firm's dedication to its extant gaming ecosystem. Prioritizing the enhancement and nurturing of their successful IPs, Microsoft's objective is to weave captivating experiences for a broad spectrum of players. However, as the VR and AR landscapes evolve, Microsoft might need to stay open to the prospect of embracing these technologies down the line, as they slowly but surely carve out their niche in gaming.
